Alaska Communications has upgraded its terrestrial and AKORN submarine networks with Ciena to improve Internet access and provide secure, reliable connectivity. The network upgrades will also support demand for mobile broadband services, serve as a cloud enablement platform for Alaska businesses, and allow Alaska Communications to continue offering reliable Unlimited Internet to residents.

Meeting the two-month scheduled installation on time and on budget, Belize Telemedia Ltd (BTL) and Huawei Marine announced the successful delivery of BTL’s Strategic Evolution Underwater Link (SEUL) project, bringing fiber-optic submarine cable connectivity to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. Stretching over 23km from the Belize mainland to the Caye, this fiber optic connectivity will be integral in the delivery of world class, lightning fast broadband speeds to the island.

Moog Focal announces the successful qualification and release of the Quad Serial Server (QSS) module. This product combines a 4-channel serial server with integrated 3-port Ethernet switch on a single 3U Eurocard to seamlessly integrate serial interface sensors with modern Ethernet-based control systems. It also enable transmission of Ethernet data over legacy serial telemetry links. The low power, space efficiency, and remote configurability of the QSS facilitates subsea integration and significantly reducing costs of subsea upgrades and new developments.

Speedcast International Limited announced Geoscience Australia, Australia's pre-eminent public sector geoscience organization, has renewed its contract with Speedcast for life-saving connectivity applications. Speedcast provides VSAT connectivity for Geoscience Australia’s seismic reading and GPS land movement applications.

The Space Flight Laboratory (SFL) announced the successful launch of two Norwegian microsatellites developed and built by SFL for the Norwegian Space Centre with support from the Norwegian Coastal Authority, Space Norway, and the European Space Agency. The Soyuz-2.1a rocket carrying the satellites into orbit launched from Baikonur at 06:36:49 UTC Friday 14 July 2017.

Deep Blue Cable has announced that they have contracted with TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity Ltd. company, to build and deploy the Deep Blue subsea cable system. The pan-Caribbean system design spans nearly 12,000 km with initial landing points in 12 markets throughout the region, including the Cayman Islands, Curaçao, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, and Turks & Caicos Islands, with dual diverse landings in the U.S., which will include the first landing of a cable on the Gulf Coast of Florida.

Engineering researchers at the University of Waterloo are working with Ciena to find solutions to help network operators and Internet providers respond to the insatiable demand for faster and faster data transmission over the Internet.
