Sonardyne Newest Member for Southampton Marine Robotics Innovation Centre

Subsea technology company, Sonardyne International Ltd, has become the newest Associate Member of the National Oceanography Centre’s (NOC) Marine Robotics Innovation Centre.

Sonardyne and NOC have a long history of working together, with Sonardyne acoustic positioning equipment currently installed on the NOC’s deep-diving Remotely Operated Vehicle and fleet of Autosub autonomous underwater vehicles, and an Innovate UK funded project currently underway. This new collaboration is expected to see further ground-breaking ocean science projects take place.

Viper Subsea Wins Queen’s Award for Its Ground-Breaking V-LIFE Electrical Insulation Resistance Improvement System

Viper Subsea, the Portishead and Aberdeen based subsea engineering company that provides consultancy and develops products for the oil and gas sector worldwide, is celebrating winning a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation for its ground-breaking V-LIFE Electrical Insulation Resistance Improvement System.

V-LIFE has enjoyed spectacular global success since it was launched in 2013 and has become established as a key component in helping operators extending the life of their offshore fields. The system has been deployed as far afield as Indonesia and Australia.

The V-LIFE acts as both a preventative measure and an active 'healer' to low insulation resistance. By deploying an electro-kinetic and electrochemical process developed by Viper Subsea, the V-LIFE can minimize and mitigate the effect of water ingress into the insulation. It is a standalone device that can be readily retrofitted into topside equipment or provided as a function of the V-LIM. The V-LIFE also monitors the insulation resistance, voltage and current of the subsea umbilical with high accuracy and can display the IR graphically in real time giving a visual indication of the effectiveness of the system. Marine Environmental Observation Prediction and Response (MEOPAR) Network Appoints New Executive Director

The Marine Environmental Observation Prediction and Response (MEOPAR) Network’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Stefan Leslie to the role of MEOPAR Executive Director.

Mr. Leslie joins MEOPAR following a diverse career in the private sector and government, most recently as Regional Director of Fisheries Management (Maritimes Region), Fisheries and Oceans Canada. He brings a strong depth and breadth of experience leading marine research and management programs to the MEOPAR role.

Mr. Leslie joins the Network as it seeks renewal from the federal Networks of Centres of Excellence Program. If successful, it will see the Network funded for an additional five years (2017 – 2022).

MEOPAR began its search for a new Executive Director following the unexpected passing of its former Executive Director, Neil Gall, in early January, 2016.

“Neil made extraordinary contributions to our Network and we miss his energetic leadership greatly”, said MEOPAR Scientific Director Dr. Douglas Wallace. “I’m thankful to have someone of Stefan’s caliber on board to build on the momentum that Neil helped so much to create, and I look forward to working with him closely as we continue to grow and evolve as a Network”.

New Flag for the NATO Research Vessel Alliance

The larger of CMRE’s ships is now operated by an Italian military crew under an Italian Navy Flag.

On 9 April 2016, at the Italian Naval Base in La Spezia (Italy), the Raising of the Italian Flag Ceremony was held in the presence of Italian and NATO civilian and military authorities, including Vice Admiral Ignacio J. Horcada Rubio, SACT Representative in Europe, Vice Admiral Filippo Maria Foffi, Commander in Chief of the Italian Naval Fleet, Major General Albert Husniaux, NATO STO (Science and Technology Organization) Chief Scientist, and Rear Admiral (Ret.) Hank Ort, STO CMRE Director.

The NATO Research Vessel Alliance is one of the only two NATO-owned research vessels, supporting the STO (Science and Technology Organization) CMRE (Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation), based in La Spezia (Italy), to fulfil its mission for the common benefit of all NATO member nations.

On 1 January 2016, the custody of NRV Alliance transitioned from the Supreme Allied Command Transformation (the NATO Command in Norfolk, USA) to CMRE, as part of the STO creation and NATO and CMRE reform process started in 2012. As a consequence of the transition, the previous flagging agreement with Germany ceased on 31 December 2015 and Italy offered to take over the ship.

Both CMRE ships (this includes the Coastal Research Vessel Leonardo, being operated by the Italian Navy since 2010) are now enrolled in the Italian Navy Military Log (Quadro del Naviglio Militare dello Stato), fly the Italian flag and are based in La Spezia (Italy). In December 2015 Vice Admiral Claudio Gaudiosi, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy (on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Defence), and Rear Admiral (Rtd) Hank Ort, CMRE Director (on behalf of STO CMRE), signed the memorandum of understanding which provides a new stable and cost effective operating model for both ships. Thus, the two vessels apply the Smart Defence concept to maritime Science and Technology (S&T), by pooling and sharing cost-effective seagoing capabilities in order to deliver validated, reality-proven, risk-reduced and system approach S&T innovation. Moreover, the new close collaboration enhances the longstanding strategic partnership between CMRE and the Italian Navy.

NRV Alliance is a 93-metre, 3,180-ton, open-ocean ice-capable research vessel which offers 400 square meters of laboratory space and extensive and sophisticated navigation, computer, and communication equipment. The NRV Alliance was designed to minimize noise radiating from the ship into the water, making it an excellent platform for sonar testing and other types of research where a quiet undersea environment is essential. For this, NRV Alliance is considered to be one of the quietest ships in the world.

Thanks to NRV Alliance and CRV Leonardo, CMRE is the only NATO entity that can work through the entire maritime technology development process, from concept to prototype testing at sea.

Welcome to the Newest Member of the Nation’s Research Vessel Fleet, the R/V Neil Armstrong!

Christened after the legendary explorer Neil Armstrong, the new ship will seek to follow his legacy of exploration and scientific discovery. Capable of ranging up to 11,500 nautical miles, the Neil Armstrong is 238 feet long, is equipped with two full-sized labs, and can support up to 44 scientists and crew.

The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) is excited to be amongst the first to use this vessel as the R/V Armstrong recovered two OOI Moorings during its “Science Verification III (SVC III)” Cruise from Virginia to Woods Hole, MA. These moorings were the Coastal Pioneer Array Central Surface Mooring and Upstream Inshore Profiler Mooring located on the continental shelf south of Martha’s Vineyard.

Home-ported at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Armstrong will be enlisted for future Pioneer Array maintenance cruises, as well as cruises to the Global Irminger Sea Array southeast of Greenland.

The Coastal Pioneer and Global Irminger Sea Arrays are the OOI’s two arrays in the North Atlantic. The Coastal Pioneer Array is one of two coastal arrays and is located along the continental shelf-break front off the coast of New England. The Pioneer Array’s oceanographic and meteorological observations from the highly productive region along the continental shelf-break off the coast of New England. This array allows scientists and educators to examine several important coastal processes, including shelf break fronts, frontal upwelling, and the role of filaments and eddies in cross-shelf exchange of parameters such as nutrients, heat, and biomass.

The Global Irminger Sea Array is one of four global sites in the OOI focusing on the critical, yet under-sampled, high-latitude regions of the Pacific and Atlantic. It includes a network of moorings that will support sensors for measurement of air-sea fluxes of heat, moisture and momentum; physical, biological and chemical properties throughout the water column.

The OOI, a project funded by the National Science Foundation, is an integrated infrastructure of science-driven platforms and sensor systems that measure physical, chemical, geological, and biological properties and processes from the seafloor to the sea surface. It was designed to provide data to address scientific challenges such as climate and ecosystem health.

U-Boat Worx Unveils New Deepest-Diving Tourist Submarine

U-Boat Worx has launched three new luxury submarine models: the Cruise Sub 5, Cruise Sub 7 and Cruise Sub 9. The Cruise Sub 5 and 7 are capable of diving to 1,140 meters making them the deepest-diving tourist submersibles ever. Depending on the model, it can carry 5, 7 or 9 persons per dive.

After the first success stories of submersibles operated from luxury Cruise Ships like The Taipan from Star Cruises and the Crystal Esprit, the Netherlands-based submersible manufacturer is seeing increased demand from the industry.

“Our operations on cruise ships inspired the development of the Cruise Sub series” says Bert Houtman, Founder and Chairman at U-Boat Worx. “Whether the operator focuses on exclusive deep sea exploration in remote destinations or on doing numerous subsea excursions on coral reefs, the Cruise Subs are optimized for maximizing the guest experience”.

Traditional tourist submersibles have small windows, and passenger seating much like a bus. The new Cruise Sub series is based on the U-Boat Worx submersibles that are used on exclusive private super yachts and by research institutes. All guests will enjoy the same panoramic experience thanks to two large acrylic spheres that place everyone on the front row.

The interior can revolve inside the sphere, ensuring passengers always have the best view while diving – regardless of the direction the submersible is travelling.

The submersibles are designed to international standards and can be operated non-stop for up to 12 hours. The submersibles are battery-powered and therefore have no impact on the marine environment in which they operate, so diving in a U-Boat Worx submarine is an ecologically sound activity.

Teledyne to Acquire CARIS

Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY) (“Teledyne”) and CARIS jointly announces that the CARIS business and its international affiliates (collectively, “CARIS”) have agreed to be acquired by a wholly-owned subsidiary of Teledyne. CARIS, headquartered in Fredericton, New Brunswick, is the leading developer of geospatial software designed for the hydrographic and marine community. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The closing of the transaction, which is subject to customary conditions, is anticipated to occur in the second quarter of 2016.

Founded in 1979, CARIS pioneered software for processing and visualizing sonar data, as well as for producing, managing and distributing marine geospatial information. Today, CARIS offers the most comprehensive solution for bathymetry, seafloor imagery and water column data processing, capable of handling multiple types of sonar and LIDAR sensors simultaneously. CARIS also develops a complete suite of paper and electronic navigational chart production and management software. Approximately 90% of the world’s hydrographic offices use CARIS in their workflow.

Cape Henry Associates Awarded Multimillion-Dollar U.S. Navy Training Contract

The U.S. Navy has awarded Cape Henry Associates, along with five other companies, a curriculum analysis and planning services task order contract worth a projected $154 million over a six-year total ordering period. The contract will support the Naval Education Training Command’s Naval Training Products and Services program.

Cape Henry Associates aims to grow their workforce even further in 2016, and with this contract win they plan to provide even more careers to military veterans. “This contract has the potential to add dozens of new permanent jobs at Cape Henry Associates. The work required under this contract by definition mandates military knowledge. Where better to find our subject matter experts than to tap the top-shelf men and women formerly serving our country? We are 75 percent veterans today, and I can see no reason why we wouldn’t maintain that commitment to our veterans,” stated Jon Drews, chief executive officer of Cape Henry Associates.

Naval Supply Systems Command awarded the multiple-award, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity, firm-fixed-price contract through a solicitation posted on the Federal Business Opportunities website. Work is expected to be completed by April 2019, or April 2022 if all options are exercised.

Call for Abstracts Open for Cost Efficiencies Event

The Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) and The Hydrographic Society in Scotland (THSiS) are calling for abstracts for its annual joint half day seminar on June 15 at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC).

The topic for the seminar is ‘Cost Efficiencies - more bang for your buck’, and has been chosen to provide a forum to look at innovative equipment, methodologies and business models which can help address the needs of industry in a time of reduced oil prices and the associated drive for cutting costs.

• Procurement & Supply Chain Management (PSCM) - New or different approaches to contracting

• Methodologies - new methodologies, whether business or operational which will provide efficiencies

World’s First ‘Offshore’ Aquaculture Development Project Receives Green Light From Norwegian Government

The Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Fisheries has approved Norway’s first development concession enabling Ocean Farming AS, supported by Kongsberg Maritime AS, to build the world’s first automated ‘exposed’ aquaculture facility. Situated outside of Trondheim, this innovative new facility introduces a paradigm shift in salmon farming now, and other fish types in the future and is a significant step in Norway’s efforts to deliver technical solutions to address the impending global food gap challenge.

Ocean Farming AS, supported by Kongsberg Maritime AS, building the world’s first automated ‘exposed’ aquaculture facility

The Ocean Farming facility is a new and innovative design, developed to overcome the challenges of more traditional inshore fish farming facilities by being located in deeper waters, further from the coast. The submerged, anchored fixed structure will float steady in the exposed ocean and is suitable for water depths of 100 to 300 meters, where the aqua biological conditions are more ideal for aquaculture on ‘the fish’s terms’. The benefits of offshore fish farms are numerous, with conditions more suited to nurturing healthy fish, such as steady currents that limit exposure to sea lice infection. The facility is fully automated with normal operation requiring a crew of just 3 – 4 people. It can also be remotely operated.



The project combines the best of existing technology and solutions from the Norwegian fish farming industry and the offshore oil and gas sector. KONGSBERG is playing a key role by leveraging its position as a turnkey supplier of technology and engineering services for complex oil & gas production units, offshore vessels, fisheries and sensor systems for oceans research and environmental monitoring. In addition to technology integration KONGSBERG is providing EIT engineering services, including delivery and installation of the gensets and aqualight systems.

The Kongsberg Maritime technology scope of supply for the fish farm itself includes the K-Chief 600 automation system controlling a large number of different systems. Other highlights of KONGSBERG’s role in the project include an extensive telecoms and positioning package, covering a range of products such as the Maritime Broadband Radio (MBR) for communication between offshore sites and to shore and precise Motion Reference Units (MRU). In addition, KONGSBERG is responsible for the AIS requirements of the project, through delivery of the AISBS610 system and associated AIS infrastructure.

Below the water, sophisticated products from KONGSBERG will provide a clear view of the action. Leading the subsea delivery is the high-tech Simrad EK80 scientific echo sounder, a range of underwater cameras and an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), velocimeter and O2 sensors. Other sensors include Tank Sounding and Water Ingress Detection. The subsea delivery is designed to accurately detect where the fish are in the vast water volume of the cage and how they move in order to ensure effective feeding. In addition, advanced 3D display of the fish and relevant environmental parameters will be provided to the operators.

The project will be the first in the world to combine marine engineering, marine cybernetics and marine biology via a ‘big data’ approach fusing all the available underwater sensors and in this way offer decision support systems for the operators controlling and monitoring the feeding of the salmon and the overall physical environment of the sea.

“The Ocean Farming facility introduces a paradigm shift in salmon farming now, and other fish types in the future. With greater focus on biology and nurturing healthier fish, the concept delivers significantly improved yields that will prove important in the decades to come as part of Norway’s strategy to leverage its aquaculture and offshore expertise to meet the challenges of accelerating population growth and the pressures this places on the world’s food supply chain,” comments Egil Haugsdal, President, Kongsberg Maritime.

“To succeed in placing fish farming in exposed areas as a viable solution to address the food gap challenge, we need to integrate and harmonize a wide range of maritime and offshore technologies, for the fish farm itself and the new vessels that will serve it.
