The First Dual-Functional Subsea Laser Scanners from Newton Labs

Newton Labs M series underwater laser scanners have the ability to execute both high-resolution internal scans and fixed-line scans with IMUs at depths up to 4000 meters. These scanners are the only ones in the world that can do both at depth.

Most subsea laser scanners have limitations for acquiring underwater and subsea data that covers wide surface areas, while also having the ability to acquire high-resolution data for intricate analysis. There are also limitations based on the deployment method such as divers, ROV/AUV, crawlers for having flexibility on the type of data that can be collected.

Newton Labs has developed dual scanning laser systems that remove the need to choose between the two. Fixed-line and internal scanning are both modes that the Newton M series scanners can provide.

2 ScannerInternal scanning is the process of collecting high-resolution scan data with the scanner in a stationary position. Once the scanner is in the desired potion and the target is in view, the laser line itself moves with the assistance of an internal motor to sweep across the scan area and collect data independently without the need of an INS/IMU. This provides much higher resolution scan data than fixed-line scanning.

Fixed-line scanning is the basic methodology that is currently available. The scanner, while mounted to an ROV/AUV or crawler, in combination with an IMU/INS, moves across the target area in a constant motion and collects data; however with only limited accuracy. The laser line is fixed in the scanner and the movement is from the deployment device such as an ROV.

Internal scanning does not require the assistance of an INS to be fully operated and fully functions in shallow water, as well as depths up to 4000 meters.

Each scanner equipped with dual scanning mode can be easily integrated with ROV/AUVs, crawlers, divers, boats, and pole mounting.

This range of dual capabilities allows for a full spectrum of data collection. This includes shallow and deep waters, while also covering large surface areas and specific areas or objects of interest for high-resolution data.
