Prysmian Group, world leader in the energy and telecom cable systems industry, has secured the largest ever submarine cable contract awarded in the US. The contract has been awarded by Dominion Energy Virginia, a subsidiary of Dominion Energy Inc., to a consortium made up of Prysmian and the DEME Group, a leader in the offshore wind industry. The Balance of Plant (BoP) contract includes the complete package for the transportation and installation of the foundations and the substations and the EPCI (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation) services for the inter-array and export cables for the future largest commercial offshore windfarm in the United States. This project is a major milestone for Prysmian Group, as it is the first cable company in the offshore wind industry to sign a Balance of Plant contract. The total value of the contract is approximately €1.6 billion, of which around €630 million related to Prysmian for the cable supply and the installation works under its responsibility. The project is expected to be completed by 2026.
For the offshore wind farm Luchterduinen in The Netherlands, Jan De Nul was requested by Eneco to rebury a section of an existing export cable. To this purpose, Jan De Nul modified its in-house designed and fabricated intertidal trencher Sunfish and successfully reburied the nearshore section of the cable to a minimum depth of 2.5 meters below the seabed.
CRP Subsea and Hellenic Cables have completed dynamic cable testing at the University of Exeter, as part of the EU-funded MaRINET2 research programme. The results show that when tested with a CRP Subsea Bend Stiffener (protecting it against overbending) the power cable survived 3.7 times as many cycles and was on average 72.5% stiffer than the power cable alone. These results highlight the importance of a Bend Stiffener’s presence to extend the fatigue life of the system to be used in future Floating Offshore Wind (FOW) applications.
In May 2021, The International Cable Protection Committee (ICPC) launched a campaign to hire a UK-based Project Manager, and after a thorough review process of qualified candidates, the ICPC has selected Mr. John Wrottesley to fill this new role and they are pleased to announce his contract with the organization commenced on September 14, 2021.
