ASV to Deliver Unmanned Surface Vehicle Systems to Anglo-French MMCM Program

Recognized as a world leader in the provision of autonomous surface vehicles, ASV has been enlisted as part of the Thales-BAE consortium to develop and deliver the first complete operational unmanned mine countermeasures system.

The program seeks to offer a low risk, robust and reliable solution into the UK/French Maritime Mine Countermeasures (MMCM) requirement.

The USV capability to be provided by ASV has been proven and validated at sea through the Halcyon multi-role USV. The vehicle which was showcased at DSEI 2013 had its full autonomy capability validated in a demonstration to the UK MOD which took place in September 2014.

“Our Halcyon class of multi-role Autonomous Surface Vehicles has been developed over the course of our long standing relationship with Thales to offer the ideal solution to the MMCM program. Developed from the Halcyon design, the more complex and capable mark II offers greater efficiency, stability and an increased payload capacity” said ASV Managing Director Dan Hook.

Maritime autonomy is recognized as a key area of technological development reflected by the investment being made by the UK and French MOD into the development of an MCM solution centered on autonomous and unmanned systems. This MMCM program seeks to demonstrate the maturity of the industry provided autonomous solutions.

Broken down into various stages, the program output will be two identical systems for evaluation against several predefined operational scenarios. Following an initial de-risking study, detail design has now begun. This first official stage comprising a design study prior to system build is scheduled to run until the end of 2016. This will also involve working with the end user to define the requirement and place consideration on other external factors. Stages 2 and 3 will include the system manufacture and demonstrations.

New Technical Director Appointed for IMCA

Richard Benzie has been appointed Technical Director of the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) to replace Jane Bugler who retires at the end of this month (September 2015) after 18 years in the role. He will join IMCA in the near future.

Replacing Jane is therefore a big challenge, but one that I relish.” says Richard. “In these testing times for our industry I am delighted to be joining an organization I know well, whose track record I respect, and which is firmly committed to the principle of helping its 1,000+ members in more than 60 countries add value rather than cost to their ongoing business around the globe.

He has been committed to marine contracting from the moment he joined the industry, and has seen IMCA at work ‘from the other side’ having held many committee positions, the most recent of which was as Vice Chairman of IMCA’s Remote Systems & ROV Division Management Committee. He will certainly be able to ‘hit the ground running’. I wish him well, and know IMCA’s technical program is in safe hands. I am firmly of the view that Richard will greatly enjoy his new role.

“My role over the past 18 years has been responsibility for our extensive and varied technical program and for liaison between IMCA and external organizations, including other trade associations such as OGP, OCIMF and IADC; regulators such as PSA, HSE, and USCG, and other relevant organizations. Naturally my role has included working with our expanding technical team, co-ordinating their work with IMCA's committees and workgroups, the preparation of technical guidance and briefing papers, review of third-party drafts, oversight of technical audits (both of applicant members and establishments seeking recognition of certain training courses), and communicating our work widely.”

About Richard Benzie
Richard joined the industry in 1981 working first as a Mud-logging Equipment Field Service Engineer. He then moved into ROV operations and spent eight years with Wharton Williams (2W) Ltd before moving to Rockwater Ltd as ROV Project Manager and Subsea Manager, spanning a period of nearly five years. Six years at Stolt Offshore then followed where he became Group Manager – Mobile Assets after roles as ROV Support Engineer and ROV Manager.

He was Asset Manager at Thales Geosolutions at the start of the century and in 2001 Richard moved to Technip Offshore where he spent seven years on the DSVi Contract, a multi-Client Saturation Diving call-off Project; initially as Project Engineer, subsequently as Team Leader and finally as Project Manager; before moving to Subsea 7 as Global ROV Manager, from 2009 until 2014. Latterly at Eunoia Services Aberdeen he has undertaken business and operations management consultancy in the oil and gas subsea sector before taking up the position of Global ROV Services Manager at Forum Energy Technologies.

Hexatronic to Provide Subsea Cable Worth 10 MSEK to Global Submarine Installer

Hexatronic Cables & Interconnect Systems has secured a contract with A-2-Sea Solutions Limited, a privately owned British based company that installs and maintains subsea cable for some of the biggest operators in the market.

In the contract worth 10M Swedish Crowns (SEK), Hexatronic will supply approximately 20 km of rock armored submarine ribbon cable, for the Isle of Wight to Portsmouth installation project. The three layer armored cable is designed to withstand demanding undersea conditions.

Hampshire based A-2-Sea Solutions is a global submarine installer within the fiber optic subsea and subaqueous industries utilizing their own land, beach and marine joint technology. Hexatronic offers solutions for submarine cables and the entire passive fiber infrastructure including design, manufacturing and supply.

McMurdo Introduces Next-Generation Software to Improve Life-Saving, Satellite-Aided Search & Rescue Process

Industry-first features include Built-In System Redundancy, Unified Inbox and Advanced

In a typical Cospas-Sarsat search and rescue scenario, a distress signal from an emergency beacon is sent via satellite to a fixed ground receiving station or Local User Terminal. The nearby MCC confirms the emergency, analyzes location data and provides this information to the various Rescue Coordination Centers for the actual rescue operation.

PRISMA MCC’s improved functionality includes built-in system redundancy, unified communications and automated reporting to improve the MCC operation and streamline the search and rescue process. The international Cospas-Sarsat satellite system is best known for detecting and locating emergency beacons activated by aircraft, ships and backcountry hikers in distress and has been credited with saving 37,000 lives since 1982.

Subsea UK to Support SMEs with Apprenticeships

Subsea UK has launched a new support service to bring fresh, young talent into the subsea sector by making it easier for businesses to recruit apprentices.

Research conducted by the industry body which represents the UK’s £9billion subsea sector revealed the barriers for SMEs in setting up apprenticeships. These are broadly the time and cost involved in what is perceived as a complex process.

Subsea UK’s scheme will provide financial support and specific help with making the process simpler so that small firms can benefit from apprentices and develop the next generation of subsea workers.

Subsea UK chief executive, Neil Gordon said: “The majority of our 320 members are smaller sized companies who are put off recruiting apprentices because they lack the HR knowledge and resources to deal with the overall recruitment and management process. Our findings revealed that they often turn to training providers or organizations but often this doesn’t work for them. The research showed that the most effective approach to make it easier for these companies to take on apprentices would be practical, one-to-one consultancy to support them through the process rather than producing generic guidance which is already available through other skills organizations.”

Subsea UK will offer tailored support to individual companies to help them with the overall recruitment process, development of training plans, setting clear roles and responsibilities for on-the-job training and conducting assessments. By working directly with companies, Subsea UK can makes sure their needs are aligned to the apprenticeship program and help them access funding.

Mr. Gordon added: “By working with companies on a one-to-one basis, we will help lift the barriers that currently prevent them from launching apprenticeship schemes to secure a supply of people with the skills and competences they need, which are often not available on the external job market.”

WGP Completes TGS HR3D (P-CableTM) 2D & 3D Spring Surveys 2015

Spring 2015 P-CableTM High Resolution 3D (“HR3D”) and 2D (“HR2D”) operations for TGS in the Barents Sea have now been completed on schedule thanks to a combination of excellent operational performance, minimum downtime and favorable weather conditions.

The program of work comprised both extended regional coverage with HR2D data acquisition, combined with targeted HR3D blocks, as part of the ongoing development of TGS’ multi-client library in the Barents Sea. The aim of this season’s work was to acquire speculative HR2D data in new blocks, to provide an insight into the potential of P-CableTM data and also shallow target resolution in previously identified focus areas. The 60-day program, which commenced on the 3rd May 2015, acquired totals of 4,630km HR2D and 325km2 HR3D data.

Anna Ward, Operations Project Manager commented: “We have seen first-rate results from the HR2D/3D (P-CableTM) surveys this season with the best recorded production figures and lowest technical downtime hours in the 4 years that WGP has been providing HR3D (P-CableTM) surveys. This is in no uncertain part due to the continuous development and improvement to the in-sea equipment that WGP has achieved together with the equipment manufacturer (Geometrics Inc.).

The survey program maintained WGP’s goal towards ‘zero harm’ with excellent HSE performance including zero HSE incidents, while the working relationship between the WGP and Vestland crew onboard the ‘Bergen Surveyor’ has gone from strength to strength with this collaboration helping achieve this exceptional performance”.

The Ocean Cleanup Prepares for 2020 Pacific Cleanup, Successfully Completes Mega Expedition Reconnaissance Mission

The Ocean Cleanup successfully concluded the Mega Expedition with the arrival of a first group of vessels including the fleet’s 171ft mothership in the port of San Francisco. Using a series of measurement techniques, including trawls and aerial surveys, the fleet of close to 30 vessels sampled the concentration of plastic during its month-long voyage through the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. This is in preparation for the large-scale cleanup of the area, set to begin in 2020.

The Mega Expedition’s primary goal is to accurately determine how much plastic is floating in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, by executing the largest ocean research expedition in history. This was also the first time large pieces of plastic, such as ghost nets and Japanese tsunami debris, have been quantified.

“I’ve studied plastic in all the world’s oceans, but never seen any area as polluted as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” said Dr. Julia Reisser, Lead Oceanographer at The Ocean Cleanup. “With every trawl we completed, thousands of miles from land, we just found lots and lots of plastic.”

Although the samples collected during the expedition still have to be analyzed, preliminary findings indicate a higher-than-expected volume of large plastic objects floating in the ocean.

This underscores the urgency of The Ocean Cleanup’s mission to clean it up, according to CEO and founder Boyan Slat: “The vast majority of the plastic in the garbage patch is currently locked up in large pieces of debris, but UV light is breaking it down into much more dangerous microplastics, vastly increasing the amount of microplastics over the next few decades if we don’t clean it up. It really is a ticking time bomb.”

During press conference in San Francisco harbor, Boyan announced that The Ocean Cleanup was able to conduct the Mega Expedition thanks to major financial contributions from entrepreneur-philanthropists, including Salesforce chairman, CEO and founder Marc Benioff: "Protecting the oceans should be a priority for all of Earth's citizens. The Ocean Cleanup is taking an innovative approach to preserving one of our most critical resources and raising visibility of this global challenge."

KONGSBERG Presented 'The Full Picture' for Aquaculture at Aqua Nor 2015

Represented with staff from various business units and departments, Kongsberg Maritime portrayed its vast variety of products on offer for the future of fishery and aquaculture. This was the first time Kongsberg Maritime attended the exhibition with a joint product offering for aquaculture, and the concept attracted a lot of interest from visitors.

"Aquaculture is one of the main focus areas for Kongsberg Maritime going forward, so this was the right timing for us to attend Aqua Nor," explained Thor Hukkelås, who is responsible for coordinating the aquaculture product offerings in Kongsberg Maritime.

"Only 2% of the world's food production comes from the ocean, and only 2% of this is from Norwegian aquaculture, so there is a huge potential for increased production of seafood along the Norwegian coast. Using our long coastline and offshore ocean areas to produce healthy food for the world's growing population must surely be one of the most meaningful activities that we can be involved in," said Hukkelås.

Based on proven technology
As a partner in the newly established SFI Exposed Aquaculture Operations managed by SINTEF, Kongsberg Maritime can provide a range of various systems for aquaculture, such as different types of sensors and echo sounders for real time visualization of fish distribution in order to monitor such factors as fish behavior, size distribution, activity levels and position.

Kongsberg Maritime also offers several other systems for fish farms, such as automation, navigation and communication systems for data transfer to shore.

"None of these products are new in our portfolio. They are all based on proven technology over decades. The challenge is to integrate these systems, to gather the vast amount of data from a large number of different subsea sensors and to present these data to the human operator in a meaningful and intuitive way," Hukkelås commented.

Increasing demand for food
The Minister of Fisheries, Elisabeth Aspaker, gave the opening speech at the exhibition, focusing on the growing world population and the increasing need for sustainable food production such as fishery and seafood.

"We live in a world in dramatic change. While our climate is shifting, world population is increasing by the day. By 2050 there will be 9 billion people on earth. The demand for clean and affordable energy will surge, and according to the Food and Agriculture Organization, food demand will increase by a staggering 100%. Feeding a growing world population is one of the major challenges facing the global community today, and fish and seafood are a crucial part of the solution," said Aspaker.

"The potential for sustainable growth and wealth creation within fisheries and aquaculture is great. Yet, at the same time the industry is faced with challenges related to sustainability and green growth. The good news is that we have more and more examples showing that marine sectors such as fisheries and aquaculture can be managed in a way that meets the three dimensions of sustainability: environmental, social and economic," Aspaker continued.

NOAA: In 2012, U.S. Ocean and Great Lakes Economy Grew Much Faster than Overall GDP

The U.S. ocean economy outpaced the domestic economy between 2011 and 2012, with an increase of $22 billion in gross domestic product, from $321 billion to $343 billion, according to a new NOAA analysis.

Adjusting the figures to remove the effects of inflation, this increase equates to a 10.5 percent rate of growth—more than four times as fast as the U.S. economy as a whole. The report is based on 2012 U.S. national economic statistics released in August 2014.

Five of the six ocean economy sectors grew faster than the national average of 2.5 percent. Offshore mineral extraction, which saw employment increases of 8.6 percent and inflation-adjusted GDP increased by 20.9 percent, grew most dramatically of all. The study looked at coastal marine construction, living resources, offshore mineral extraction, ship and boat building, tourism and recreation, and marine transportation.

NOAA’s 2012 Report on the U.S. Ocean and Great Lakes Economy (PDF, 1MB) shows how dependent local businesses are on the U.S. ocean and Great Lakes. These businesses represent an essential and resilient part of our nation’s economy. In 2012, these sectors employed 2.9 million people—more than crop production, telecommunication, and building construction combined—and produced more than $343 billion in goods and services.

“The oceans and Great Lakes benefit Americans from all across the country, no matter where they live, even if it’s not near the coast,” said Jeffery Adkins, an economist in NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management. “We fish from their waters, vacation along their coasts, ship cargo on their surface, and extract oil, gas, sand and gravel from their seafloors. By showing how the oceans and Great Lakes contribute directly to the economy, this kind of data can help decision makers protect these resources and use them wisely.”

According to the report, additional key coastal economic 2012 facts included:

  • $113 billion in annual wages,
  • 3.8 percent growth in employment, more than twice the 1.8 percent national rate,
  • 147,000 total business establishments,
  • 108,000 new jobs created,
  • Salaries were above the national average for workers in marine construction, ship and boat building, marine transportation, and offshore mineral extraction.

The national average for wages was $49,000; for the ocean and Great Lake industries, the national average ranged from $63,000 to $143,000.

In addition, the U.S. ocean and Great Lakes economy is a strong contributor to the economy of many states:

California employed the highest number of workers, accounting for 17 percent of the nation’s ocean-dependent employment and 22 percent of the nation’s employment in the marine transportation sector.

Texas contributed the most to the nation’s ocean GDP, mainly from offshore mineral production. Texas alone produced 35 percent of the ocean-dependent GDP in 2012.

Michigan was the leading state in the growth of Great Lakes and ocean employment. After being severely affected by the economic downturn, Michigan’s ocean employment grew prominently by 8 percent in 2012, much faster than the overall state average of 2.1 percent.

This information was derived from NOAA’s Economics: National Ocean Watch (ENOW) data set. ENOW provides time-series data on the ocean and Great Lakes economy and is available for counties, states, regions, and the nation in a wide variety of formats. These data feature nationally consistent information that helps users understand and manage the diverse economic demands placed on the oceans and Great Lakes.

NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management developed ENOW time-series data and other products using information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, and the Bureau of Economic Analysis, a sister agency of NOAA in the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Oceaneering Announces the Promotion of Eric A. Silva to Senior Vice President, Operations Support

Mr. Silva joined Oceaneering in February 2014 as Vice President and Chief Information Officer. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and is a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Texas.

As Senior Vice President, Operations Support, Mr. Silva will continue his leadership of Information Technology and assume additional responsibility for Human Resources, Supply Chain Management, and Internal Audit. Mr. Silva’s career spans over 30 years in the oilfield service, chemical, energy, and oil and gas industries. In addition to his extensive information technology services leadership experience, he has held internal audit, accounting, financial analysis, and corporate treasury positions and managed, in various capacities, human resources and risk management departments.

Mr. Silva is replacing Alan R. Curtis, who has been appointed Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.
