Texas A & M University Establishes Ocean Engineering Department

The College of Engineering at Texas A&M University has announced the establishment of the Department of Ocean Engineering, a department that combines two existing programs within Texas A&M University — one on the campus in College Station, Texas, and one on the marine-oriented campus in Galveston, Texas.

The merger brings together the world-class infrastructure of one of the largest engineering campuses, College Station, and the strategic location on Pelican Island and unique resources at Galveston.

Texas A&M’s College Station campus has offered undergraduate ocean engineering degrees since 1972 through the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering, and is one of only a few universities in the United States that offers degrees in ocean engineering. It is a top-ranked and ABET-accredited degree program. The Texas A&M Galveston campus has been graduating students in maritime systems engineering for more than 40 years and its offshore and coastal engineering systems program is also an ABET-accredited program. The new department will offer Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Master of Engineering degrees as well as a Ph.D. in philosophy/engineering.

Katherine Banks, vice chancellor and dean of engineering. “We are uniquely configured to build a comprehensive program that leverages our strength in the field at Texas A&M’s College Station campus with our marine campus in Galveston to address global challenges related to our oceans and engineering.”

Bibby Offshore Provides Lifeline to Oil and Gas Industry

On an evening in September 2012, a rare sequence of events left one of Bibby Offshore’s saturation divers stranded in complete darkness, 90 metres below the surface of the North Sea, without any gas to breathe.

The diver was rescued and recovered fully, but Bibby Offshore wanted to share its experience and the lessons learnt in the most effective way, so in collaboration with Floating Harbour Films, created a documentary style film, Lifeline, using real time footage and reconstruction of the event to recount the remarkable events that took place that evening.

IMarEST publishes seminal Metocean Procedures Guide

The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) has published a seminal Metocean Procedures Guide which is the first of its kind. Developed by the IMarEST’s Offshore Renewables Special Interest Group, the guide highlights the meteorological and oceanographic (metocean) information required to support all phases of an offshore renewable (OR) energy project, through development and construction to ongoing operations and maintenance.

The guide is a tool for all those involved in offshore renewables, including project managers, structural engineers, surveyors and logistics personnel based within offshore renewable companies or support organisations and contractors.

Zoe Roberts, Senior Metocean Analyst at Vattenfall Wind Power (UK) commented: “The Metocean Procedures Guide provides a concise strategy for ensuring that metocean is not neglected early in the project lifecycle, thus avoiding headaches in design, construction and operation later on.”

Metocean is a technical engineering discipline that originated in the oil and gas sector in the late 1970s and is equally applicable to the OR sector. Metocean is primarily concerned with quantifying the effects of weather and sea conditions (specifically wind, wave, current and water level) and more broadly on the physical aspects of the water column (such as conductivity and temperature). The document draws on a breadth of experience gained from offshore wind developments on fixed structures, but the majority of the information can also be applied to emerging technologies, including floating wind, wave and tidal. Although it draws primarily on UK experience, the procedures described may be applied in other parts of the world taking into account relevant local standards.

Ian Leggett, Managing Director at OceanExpert Ltd said: "This is the first metocean procedures guide for the offshore renewables (OR) industry and has been produced by a group of leading experts in the field. It provides valuable information for all those engaged in the OR sector, showing how metocean data, reports and expertise play a key role in all aspects of the project lifecycle. As well as discussing metocean strategy, data sources and management and metocean standards, the documents includes a concise list of references, applicable standards and a glossary of terms.

“I felt that we had reached a time when many lessons had been learnt about metocean strategy for offshore wind projects”, said Laure Grignon, Offshore Technical Analyst at RES Offshore, “However, its importance was still being underestimated by some projects. It was therefore important that we share our experience of defining such metocean strategies in a clear and concise document, accessible to project managers and technical specialists alike.”

BSEE Conducts Unannounced Oil Spill Exercise with Gulf of Mexico Operator

Analysts and engineers from the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement’s (BSEE) Oil Spill Preparedness Division and Gulf of Mexico Region recently conducted an unannounced spill drill of Arena Offshore. The Sept. 9 one-day exercise simulated a loss of well control event from a platform in shallow water, approximately 35 miles south of Port Fourchon, La. These exercises test an operator’s response to an incident using their oil spill response plan.

Arena Offshore currently operates more than 30 oil and gas fields on the Gulf of Mexico Shelf, comprising approximately 95 platforms and over 190 producing wells. As part of the drill, Arena Offshore was required to respond to a simulated loss of well control due to a potential blowout of the well. During an exercise an operator demonstrates successful notifications and implements other elements included in its oil spill response plan. The operator worked from its offices in The Woodlands, Texas while coordinating simulated response actions with its contracted spill response company in Slidell, Louisiana throughout the exercise. BSEE staff observed the operator’s response in both locations. The U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also attended the exercise.

Government Initiated Unannounced Exercises are designed to give BSEE the opportunity to evaluate, on a no-notice basis, an operator's access to necessary resources and test the viability of oil spill response plans. This was the 13th unannounced exercise BSEE has conducted this year.

Can a Lobster be an Archaeologist? SUT to Launch Illustrated Children’s Book to Ignite Interest in Underwater Sector Career Opportunities

9SUT-Plastic 176x246 FINALThe Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) is getting set to launch a fun, informative, illustrated book for 10–14 year olds aimed at growing interest in the wonders of underwater technology.

The book titled, Can a Lobster be an Archaeologist – Quirky Questions and Fascinating Facts about the Underwater World, will be launched in November with many past and present SUT members contributing to the content. From exploring lost treasure to sea monsters, ocean rubbish and how to build your own ROV, the book is packed with factual and fun stories brought to life by quirky illustrations by artist Rachel Hathaway.

Emily Boddy, Publications Officer at SUT explained: “We want to bring to life the excitement of the underwater world to encourage young people to get interested in the sector. A group of 10 – 14 year olds has peer reviewed the content and given insightful feedback, but we think adults will also be interested in reading about the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle, giant whirlpools and underwater robots.”

The book has been funded by the SUT, which is a not-for-profit organization and all proceeds will go towards its agenda of supporting educational development and facilitating learning and networking opportunities. The title of the book originates from a story about an 8,000 year old settlement near the Isle of Wight, rediscovered by a lobster digging to create a burrow which was then found by divers.

Swire Seabed Strengthens Its Capabilities with the Addition of Two Mobile WROVs with Launch & Recovery Systems

These modern and efficient assets are the latest addition to the company’s wide range of mobile assets

Subsea operation specialist, Swire Seabed, has placed an order for the acquisition of two Kystdesign Supporter Work-Class Remotely Operated Vehicles (WROVs) with Lidan Launch and Recovery Systems (LARS), for delivery in February 2016. Swire Seabed has the option to purchase two more WROVs.

Headquartered in Bergen, Norway, Swire Seabed is a fully owned subsidiary of Swire Pacific Offshore (SPO), a diversified marine services conglomerate. Swire Seabed prides itself on its strong track record of undertaking a wide range of subsea operations and its team of highly experienced onshore and offshore specialists. Swire Seabed’s other mobile subsea assets include a 6,000 metres depth rated Argus Bathysaurus XL WROV, a Sperre Subfighter 15k observation ROV and the Seabed Excavator, a cutting-edge multi-purpose subsea tool carrier and dredging vehicle. This is in addition to the six WROVs permanently installed on Swire Seabed’s dedicated subsea vessels.

Both the WROVs and LARS are designed for harsh and challenging environments and can be easily transported and mobilised on board Offshore Support Vessels (OSVs). These new assets will be used to support Swire Pacific Offshore’s extensive fleet of more than 80 OSVs, as well as other third party vessels that require mobile WROV systems. 

Swire Seabed is not immune to the challenges low oil prices bring, however, the strength of SPO allows the company to continue investing in new assets. Being able to offer mobile ROVs to the market and integrating them into SPO’s global fleet set Swire Seabed apart.

Kystdesign Supporter WROV
The 150HP Kystdesign Supporter WROV is a versatile Class III-B (NORSOK) work class ROV designed for construction and survey applications to a depth of 3,000 metres (with a 425 metres excursion from TMS). A robust and maintenance friendly system, it is well known for its operational reliability in harsh working environments. The system has a small footprint when installed on board a vessel. The control room is installed in a 20-foot container and a second 20-foot container functions as both a workshop and power distribution/transformer room. The control container is built with a focus on a good work environment where pilot, co- pilot, supervisor and client representative can operate without limitations.

Lidan LARS
The Lidan LARS is a compact LARS with a robust design for operations in remote areas and is easily transported by road, sea or air. It has been optimised to facilitate fast mobilisations and demobilisations on OSVs. The system is Active Heave Compensation (AHC) capable and can be easily upgraded for AHC operations. The LARS has a five-metre outreach with a telescopic A-frame making it suitable for installation on a wide range of vessels, and has a fully redundant HPU solution. The winch has a speed of 76 metres per minute. Please refer to the Kystdesign Supporter specification sheet for more information on the system.

IKM Subsea Signs New Long Term Contract with "K" Line Offshore

K Line Offshore and IKM Subsea have come to an agreement to extend the current ROV services contracts on KL Sandefjord and KL Saltfjord by 5 years until mid-2020.

The contract value including options is 140 million NOK and duration term is firm for 5 years + 2 yearly options.

International Maritime Security Associates (IMSA) and SRG Technology Launch State-of-the-Art Maritime Security Alerting System

Groundbreaking Alerting System Launched During International Shipping Week in London

SRG Technology, developer of cutting-edge data collection and analysis solutions designed to drive performance improvements, in conjunction with the International Maritime Security Associates (IMSA) will unveil a first-of-its-kind Maritime Alerting Security System (MASSTM) during International Shipping Week in London September 7th – September 11th.

New Managing Director Appointed AS JFD Continues Rapid Growth

OCEANS ’15 in Washington, DC Adds Workshops, Special Sessions, Product Theater, Career Panel and Capital Casino Gala

OCEANS ’15 MTS/IEEE Washington, DC continues to add valuable content to the program designed to appeal to a wide variety of technical professionals, industry leaders, educators, policy makers and students. The annual fall conference and exposition, co-sponsored by the Marine Technology Society and the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society, will be held October 19-22 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center at National Harbor.

The Advance Program is now available on the conference website. A number of workshops and special sessions will enhance the concurrent technical sessions that feature hundreds of peer-reviewed presentations.

Workshops will be held on Monday, October 19. There is no charge to attend a Workshop; however participants must sign up in advance via the conference registration page or at the Registration Desk to obtain an entrance badge.

Catalyzing Ocean Services in a World of Abundant Ocean Data – XPRIZE

This half day workshop, hosted jointly by the MTS Underwater Imaging Committee and IEEE OES will include a handful of invited presentations describing the latest underwater imaging technologies, either under development or available as commercial products. The attendees, who will include representatives from academia, industry and government, will be engaged in discussion to identify areas of importance and potential markets for future imaging technologies.

The Evolution of Subsea Vehicles – Jim McFarlane
The workshop will discuss the development of subsea systems for the offshore petroleum industry, starting with the manned submersible in the 1960s, followed closely by ROVs in the 1970s and AUVs in the 1980s. Subsequent markets were infiltrated with robotic systems that answered the demand, increased the safety, and still answer each market’s technical and challenging requirements.

The Exhibition Hall will have a new attraction at OCEANS ’15. This will provide a lead-in to the Conference Ice Breaker Reception, where the students may talk with other professionals from the full range of ocean-related careers.

And last, but not least, there will be fun or it wouldn’t be an OCEANS. Wednesday night’s Gala dinner will have a Capital Casino theme with a variety of gaming tables. The money won’t be real, so everyone can have the fun without the risk.

Deepocean Awarded Survey Contract by Shell

DeepOcean has been awarded a Call-off contract for provision of ROV based Survey Services by Shell in the North Sea.

DeepOcean has long track record of ROV based survey services for North Sea oil and gas operators. This contract is for three years plus options. The contract was won in a fierce competition and reflects the current strong focus on cost efficient solutions in Shell’s operations.
