World-leading subsea robotics design and manufacturing specialists, Soil Machine Dynamics (SMD) has partnered with Dutch subsea contractor N-SEA to successfully prove ground-breaking new subsea technology that could change the future of cable construction.

Van Oord has ordered a next-generation custom-built green cable-laying vessel. The vessel will be delivered from VARD in Norway and equipped with the latest sustainable technologies. The vessel will be fully operational in 2023.

NEC Corporation India (NEC India) has successfully completed the flagship optical submarine cable system connecting Chennai, India and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands (A&N Islands) for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a Government of India Enterprise. NEC Corporation (NEC, TSE: 6701), the parent company of NEC India, manufactured the optical submarine cable and provided technical assistance during the turnkey implementation.

In an interconnected world moving towards green energy the uptime of power cable systems is essential for efficient and secure transmission. NKT has entered into a service agreement for a part of the NordBalt interconnector ensuring fast mobilization in case of damages to the power cable connecting the power grids of Sweden and Lithuania.

Jan De Nul Group signed on 4 December 2020 an agreement for the purchase of the Offshore Construction and Cable-Lay Vessel Connector from Ocean Yield ASA. This marks a further investment in the offshore installation capacities of the Luxembourg based maritime contractor. The vessel will be officially transferred during the fourth quarter of 2020.

Aqua Comms DAC (“Aqua Comms”), the operator of Ireland’s first dedicated subsea fiber-optic network interconnecting New York, Dublin and London, announces the successful launch of AEC-2 (America Europe Connect-2), the company’s second Trans-Atlantic subsea cable system.

NKT has entered into service agreements with Elia, 50Hertz and Nemo Link with the purpose to ensure efficient integration of energy into the Belgian, UK and German power grid.

Prysmian S.P.A, the world’s leader in the energy and  telecom cable systems industry, together with its subsidiary in the UK Prysmian Cables & Systems Limited, have announced to have commenced proceedings for patent infringement in the UK High Court against Emtelle UK Limited (“Emtelle”).

NKT has entered into a Preferred Supplier Agreement (PSA) as main contractor for delivery and installation of high-voltage DC on- and offshore export cable systems to an European offshore wind farm.

Prysmian Group, world leader in the energy and telecom cable systems industry, has signed a preferred bidder agreement with RWE Renewables Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, the world’s second biggest offshore wind farm developer, for the development of the turn-key high voltage submarine and land export cable connection worth over €200 million for Sofia Offshore Wind Farm project.

On November 8, 2020, Nexans’ next-generation Cable Laying Vessel, the ‘Nexans Aurora’ was launched at Ulstein Verft. The 149.9 m long and 31 m wide vessel will be working in the offshore renewables market, installing subsea cables including cables connecting offshore wind farms to the grid and interconnector systems.
