NKT Wins Contract for Viking Link Interconnector Project

NKT has been awarded an approx. EUR 90m (approx. DKK 670m) contract by Energinet and National Grid, the owners of Viking Link. The contract comprises supply of approx. 150 km of 525 kV MI high-voltage DC onshore power cables for the Viking Link interconnector project, connecting the Danish and British transmission grids.

nkt logo1The power cable system, not comprising civil works, delivered by NKT constitutes the approx. 75 km connection of the project from Danish shore to the power grid substation in Revsing, southern Jutland.

The contract value of EUR 90m corresponds to approx. EUR 75m in standard metal prices (approx. DKK 560m) and is conditional upon procurement and contract finalization, which is expected during Q3 2019.

NKT Interim CEO Roland M. Andersen says:

“I am pleased that we are selected as power cables supplier to Viking Link, which is a key project for the North-European transformation towards renewable energy supplies. The award is a recognition of our technological competences also in the growing extra high-voltage interconnector segment from Energinet and National Grid.”

The NKT power cables will be manufactured in Karlskrona, Sweden, with production start expectedly in 2020. This project award does not change the 2019 financial outlook for NKT.

When completed, Viking Link will be a 760 km long DC interconnector line between Revsing in southern Jutland, Denmark and Bicker Fen in Lincolnshire, UK. Being able to balance wind production and demand across countries and closer integration between transmission grids is important for the efficient transition towards a green energy future. Implementation of Viking Link is a vital step towards achieving ambitious renewable targets in both Denmark and the UK. The interconnector line is expected to be fully commissioned in 2023.
