2013 International Human-Powered Submarine Races to be held at Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division's Model Basin

WHAT: Foundation for Underwater Research and Education's (FURE) 2013 International Human Powered Submarine Races "Media Day"
WHO: 20 teams comprised of local and international high school and college students from United States, Canada, England, Mexico, the Netherlands, Germany and Oman

WHY: ISR is a unique international engineering design competition that inspires high school and college-age students of the various engineering disciplines to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
BASE ACCESS INFORMATION: ISR races are closed to the public, but open for media coverage by appointment. Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division is an active military installation, standard DoD clearance procedures must be followed to obtain access to the base. Clearance for foreign nationals/media requires additional information and time. BACKGROUND: Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) is hosting the Foundation for Underwater Research and Education's 12th International Human-Powered Submarine Races (ISR) in the David Taylor Model Basin, June 24-28.
Since 1989, the ISR competition has grown to include participation from universities, colleges, corporations, research centers, high schools and privately sponsored teams from all over the world. Each team designs and builds a one or two-person "wet" submarine, relying upon the principles of hydrodynamic design, buoyancy, propulsion, guidance systems, underwater life support and systems engineering. The teams race the submarines using SCUBA equipment in NSWCCD's 3,200 foot-long model basin. At the end of the week-long competition, the winning teams are recognized for best overall performance, innovation, speed, best use of composite materials, and spirit of the race.
Media Day will feature opening remarks from NSWCCD's leadership, video and still photo opportunities of the racing, interviews with NSWCCD leadership and STEM mentors as well as a chance to meet the best and brightest young engineers piloting their own creative designs. Additionally, NSWCCD employees and their families will be participating in various STEM activities.
NSWCCD's responsibilities span a broad range including science and technology, research and development, test and evaluation, product delivery and fleet support. NSWCCD leads the Navy in hull, mechanical and electrical engineering expertise and delivers technical solutions in order to build and sustain a dominant, ready and affordable fleet. Headquartered in West Bethesda, Md., approximately 3,600 scientists, engineers, technicians and support personnel are located across the U.S., which includes the Ship Systems Engineering Station in Philadelphia.
